about

There's a funny history to this one (not comical, but you know). When I first came up with the hook, I was walking through my hometown by myself in the middle of winter because I was out of college on medical withdrawal. On top of throwing a stick in the spokes of my academic and social tracks, it was one of those illnesses that forced me to rethink my essential daily activities like mealtime and bedtime. Nothing felt like it was the way it was supposed to be.

I tried so hard to cling to whatever scrap of normalcy I could find while also trying to accept that this was my "new normal." That was a tall order considering how long I'd waited in my transition *to* college to feel like things had settled into place. Eventually, I came to the realization that, as stressful as change and uncertainty continue to be, life is always changing. As much as I love my routines and watching everything go according to plan, it's not always a safe bet. I often come back to the Serenity Prayer: "Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." There are simply parts of life you can't control no matter how much you want to, but when you can bring yourself to let them go and focus on making your own progress where you can, you can find a lot more hope than you could before. Plus, a little extra serotonin goes a long way.

I was originally going to save this as a deep cut for my future EP, but... life happens. Needless to say, that wasn't the last time my everyday life would be completely upended. At least, this time, I found an odd solace in knowing I'm very much not alone. My hope in producing this nearly a year after we all started hunkering down for the greater good was to bring some of that solace to all of you. Stay safe and don't give up hope; there's a better normal on the way.

lyrics

I've been wandering all 'round town
Watching buildings come and go
Year by year, the kids grow up and move out
Roads melt away with the snow

There's only salt and gravel left behind
The pavement from 10 years ago is no more
The traction's too terrible to drive downtown
I hoped we'd have much more

You can tape it back together, it still won't be the same
But no matter the weather, we still can play the game
Your world's been turned around you
But look how far you've come
Welcome
to your new normal

I've been growing year-to-year
Every quarter scoring high
Loading pressure on my shoulders and back
but never stopped to ask why

Why should I worry, and why should I care
The future's never set in stone
It's plain to see I'm not the only one here
so why do I feel so alone

You can tape it back together, it still won't be the same
But no matter the weather, we still can play the game
Your world's been turned around you
But look how far you've come
Welcome
to your new normal

I've been wandering all around town
watching traffic ebb and flow
Will there ever be a normal for me
I don't really know
No, I don't know
